And the answer is..... OWL PELLETS!! As you can see (well kinda of!) from the pictures above, he documented the size of the pellets. Then much to my grossing out factor, he gently dissected the pellet by pulling the fur and bones apart. Yes, I am grossing out just thinking about it, but I just couldn't walk away!! He only did one of the pellets and Anthony did one of the others, both boys had to figure what it was that this owl ate (which in this case was a Barn Owl) The poor victims here were rodents. As our unit study on owls is wrapping up, Alex has been studying owls a little longer than expected. He has had some field trips that involved seeing owls and then other things that have come up, like driver's ed driving, vacation, having a sick mama for over a week, you name it it came up:) This week we will finish up the owls and move on to the next animal that he is wanting to learn more about. But to finish up this unit study, has to get together all his findings and put the information into a visual aids such as a lapbook or power point presentation. Also he has a report that is due by the end of the week which he will be reading to all of us next weekend. As always, we are working on his paragraph writing and increasing his vocabulary, at least I could make his vocabulary a little more exciting with online vocabulary games from one of my favorite sites~ Vocabulary/SpellingCity.
This whole unit study was a great learning experience for both of us for his first lessons as a 9th grader. As we move forward to the next animal, I have learned of some things to take out or worksheets that were redundant. It makes this homeschooling through high school an ever involving adventure that I can't wait to hear the ending!!
Holy cow, that looks disgusting!! You are a brave, brave mama. I should admit that when it came time to dissect ANYTHING back in my school days I either played hooky or tried to team up with the weird boys who got got their general jollies from sticking pins through insects. That way I knew they would do all the work and I could dry heave into my backpack until it was over.
ReplyDeleteOh how much we are alike:) Once I found out that I had to dissect cow eyes, fetal pigs, and frogs in biology class I stood up and left the class!! AND yes right away, the teacher was like you can't just leave. Just another great memory from high school!!
ReplyDeleteAlex wasn't disgusted from this BUT start showing him pics or drawings of inside animals or people (like health class) and he is like NO THANKS! He even told them at his animal camp this summer no thanks I dont want to dissect the fetal pig. Too kind hearted of a boy, hehe the apple doesn't fall to far from the tree!! Funny whay they think is interesting and what they think is gross! I was totally grossed out! Anthony and he were not grossed out at all, they were picking up the skeleton pieces and identifying them!
Poor mama:( Bad BOYS!! LOL
Hi Michelle,
ReplyDeleteYuck! :) There's an episode of "Dirty Jobs" where Mike Rowe collects owl pellets from an old barn where a bunch of owls live, and I think he uses steam to sterilize them or something. It was gross, but educational too. I think netflix probably has it. :)
Jennifer
I know it sounds crazy, but we love owl pellets, lol! Ok, to be clear, the boys love them. I won't go near them unless I have 30 gal garbage bags covering my body. :)
ReplyDeleteThey have done them several times. Twice with Scouts, then we ordered some a few times on our own so they could do them for school. Even though I won't touch them, I have to admit it *is* cool to watch the process and see what they ended up with in their pellets, lol.
Katie :D
Jennifer and Katie! IT MUST BE A BOY THING to want to touch those nasty things! LOL!! I don't think that there is a way to ever sterilize those puppies enough for me to want to touch them. HAHA Yes neat to see the end result, I think a pile of bones that are rodents so far! still have three more left! I totally sterilized the kitchen when they were done even though we had paper-towels down! I think next time I am setting them up on a table outside! Thanks gals for stopping by and making me feel like~ NOT a BIG WUSSY!
